Sorry I have not written for some time, things have been a little crazy, but that’s life; got to roll with the punches…
My wife’s grandmother had back surgery, so we went down to Texas to spend time with her. Her surgery went well, she’s recovered nicely and is home, getting back to normal.
While we were there, we stayed at my father-in-law’s home and I love being there. He has a lot of land and it is so peaceful there. You can sit outside and see chickens running around, hear the rooster crow and just sit there in peace. We love going there to visit but the best thing about being there is my father-in-law, himself.
You see, my wife’s dad has not been a part of her life for 25 years and they finally reconnected last year and it has been great. Her whole family took me in like their own and I can not express how much that means to me. They do not care that I am a woman (instead of a man) and let me tell you they are so happy to tell everyone who I am.
I am not used to that at all!! My family does not call my wife, my wife. If we go out to the store and my mom sees someone she knows, which she knows everyone, she calls my wife, “my friend,” I guess that’s better than “roommate” but that is not the point. My wife is just that, she’s MY WIFE!! Yes, she is my friend but more importantly, she is my wife, and my family needs to respect that.
Back to what I was saying…
Her dad is awesome and so is his side of the family. I was so anxious to meet them and their friends, but they always introduce me as, “her wife,” and it’s such an amazing feeling. Her dad is so proud of us, and he tells everyone. We went to the Garden Center and we were looking for plants and there was an employee and he asked if he could help us, and before we had a chance to say anything, her dad speaks up and says, “This is my daughter and her wife, and you need to help them find some plants.” I looked at my wife with a huge smile and then we went off and found some plants.
To some people, this might not sound like a big deal, but for us it is huge. We never thought anyone in our families would do what her dad did and it just makes my heart so happy. Even her grandma, which I call my grandma, tells everyone, “these are my granddaughters.” It just blows me away! Her aunt tells people, “this is my niece and her wife,” and the same with her Great Aunt. It feels so nice that we are being recognized for being married and in love.
